Saving the Planet

At HomeShredUK after we have securely shredded your confidential paperwork, the shredded paper is baled and transported to the UK tissue mills to be recycled into new paper products.

It is of general understanding that shredded paper is not recyclable which is mostly due to domestic recycling collections not permitting shredded paper to be placed within our household wheelie bins. This is due to the size of the shreds of paper being too small to be sorted at Material Recycling Facility’s, (MRF’s).

At HomeShredUK our process differs from domestic recycling as we 100% recycle the paper we shred. Our Eco-Shred sacks are fully shredded within power commercial shredding machines. The Eco-Shred sacks are shredded in their entirety, literally within seconds and the shredded paper then travels along a conveyor belt and drops into a baling machine.

From Data to Pulp

The baling machine operates at a force of over 50 tonnes and compacts the shredded paper into a solid bale which weighs in excess of half a tonne. When the bale of paper is complete it is ejected and picked up by a fork lift and stored ready for onward transportation.

When there is approximately 20 tonnes of baled paper this is loaded onto an articulated lorry and transported to the UK tissue mills where water is added to the paper to turn it into a soupy pulp and non-recyclable items such as staples and paper clips and plastics etc are removed. The pulp is screened, cleaned and de-inked with an end result of clean pulp which then is used to make “new” paper products that we use in our daily lives such as new A4 paper and toilet roll.

By recycling paper, there is 73% less air pollution than if it was made from raw materials and 30-50% less energy is used from using recycled paper than making paper directly from trees.
